How is Social Media Affecting the Hypochlorous Acid Industry?

Sometimes an idea catches on for whatever reason and then its popularity grows. Marketers spend a lot of time trying to determine how to predict or manage brand imaging and spot trends. But sometimes trends grow, and it simply catches you off guard. Let’s see how that applies to the hypochlorous acid industry.

What is Hypochlorous Acid

Hypochlorous acid has been around since the 1800s. It’s been used for wound care, eye care, as a disinfectant / sanitizer for home and business applications, and many agricultural and industrial applications. However, largely it was ignored by the beauty industry – until now.

Going Viral on TikTok

In 2023, dermatologists began placing videos on TikTok about the benefits of including hypochlorous acid (HOCL) as part of a skin care regime. In about a year, the hashtag #hypochlorousacid had gone viral with about 6 million views on TikTok. Subsequently, sales of several hypochlorous acid products dramatically increased in beauty stores located on TikTok.

Glamour & Skin Care Magazines Take Notice

Glamour and skin care magazines started noticing this TikTok phenomenon and began writing about it around January 2024 and many are still writing about it. If you do a search for who writing articles, you will find many popular fashion magazines such as Allure, Vogue, Byrdie, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Goop, and The Kit.  Other news sources that wrote during this same time period include All Left Turns, Daily Beast, Dermatology Times, Everyday Health, Healthline, Journal of Integrative Dermatology, Med Page Today, NBC News, New York Times, Prevention, Real Simple, Very Well Health, and Women’s Health. There may be others, but you get the idea.

Most of these articles have been essentially saying what we have been saying in our blogs and various communications for some time. Hypochlorous acid has a lot of applications, and it is safe around pets and young children. It is non-toxic, eco-friendly, safe on your skin, hypoallergenic, and completely natural.

As you read through some of these articles, you will quickly see that there is broad agreement that hypochlorous acid is a very good thing to use for so many reasons. In the coming weeks, we will investigate this further. Ideas for this blog were taken from here.
